Speak No Evil (2024)

-------------------------------------------------------------------
In case you haven’t seen the intro from my entry dated 1/26/19 (it’s in my archives whenever you want to read it), I’m no longer going to review every single movie I see.  I’m going to review one, with the occasional bonus, and just give ratings for the rest from now on (unless I decide to pick it up again in the future).  You can always ask me why I gave the ratings for the films without reviews though (via comments or the e-mail addresses under the ‘About Me’ section).

Speak No Evil (2024)                                                  OK
The original Danish-Dutch film came out just two years ago!  It was my favorite film of 2022 (you can read my review for it here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2022/11/speak-no-evil.html).  I have a feeling most people, especially American audiences, haven’t even heard of it and this is going to be the first one they see.  That’s a shame too, because the first one was better.  (I know, I know, common regarding most remakes).  I didn’t dislike this one.  I might have even liked it more had the original not existed, but comparisons are inevitable, especially if you’re a fan of what came before.  This time, an American family of three meets up with an English family of three in Italy, both families living in England, the Americans eventually traveling from London to the other family’s house in the country.  It covers basically the same ground before the big reveal (which, spoiler for those that saw the original, is the same one), but what happens after is executed differently.  It’s not better, no, this one becomes more like a siege movie; a bit too Hollywood, if you will, with a more optimistic ending.  One critic rightly stated, “It makes for a far less nihilistic film than the original.  If you’re going to watch this one, and I’m not necessarily telling you not to, I highly advise you watch the original one first.  Boo-hoo if you need to read some subtitles…12/6/2024

'Salem's Lot

-------------------------------------------------------------------
In case you haven’t seen the intro from my entry dated 1/26/19 (it’s in my archives whenever you want to read it), I’m no longer going to review every single movie I see.  I’m going to review one, with the occasional bonus, and just give ratings for the rest from now on (unless I decide to pick it up again in the future).  You can always ask me why I gave the ratings for the films without reviews though (via comments or the e-mail addresses under the ‘About Me’ section).

’Salem’s Lot                                                                OK
This is the third adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.  King himself and James Wan were two of the many producers; Gary Dauberman, writer/director of Annabelle Comes Home, plus writer of the first two Annabelles and both parts of the IT remake, wrote and directed.  [My review of Annabelle: Creation is in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2017/08/mooby-reviews-82317.html, Annabelle Comes Home in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2019/07/annabelle-comes-home.html, part one of IT in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2017/09/mooby-reviews-91817.html, and chapter two in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2019/12/it-chapter-twofrozen-ii.html].  I did like King’s novel, and the first adaptation may not have been the greatest King-based work, or vampire flick, but it was fine; same for the first remake.  [My reviews of the original film, its sequel, and remake are in one of my other blogs here---https://vampireclown82-2.blogspot.com/2016/12/lets-take-trip-to-salems-lot.html; bear in mind that was penned eight years ago, so it’s in need of editing and my opinions may have been temporary; same for the reviews above].  This one does take place in the Seventies (based on movies playing at the drive-in), its attempts passable enough, although plainly apparent it was made today.  The story remains intact---a vampire is transported to a small New England town and gradually turns the residents into bloodsuckers.  Everything that happened before basically transpires here, with a few tweaks here and there.  It’s not a terrible film, there are enough moments to make it at least okay, but, like many a remake/reimagining/reboot (this being the second stab), it ultimately makes you wonder whether or not it was really necessary.  11/29/2024
