Under Paris

-------------------------------------------------------------------
In case you haven’t seen the intro from my entry dated 1/26/19 (it’s in my archives whenever you want to read it), I’m no longer going to review every single movie I see.  I’m going to review one, with the occasional bonus, and just give ratings for the rest from now on (unless I decide to pick it up again in the future).  You can always ask me why I gave the ratings for the films without reviews though (via comments or the e-mail addresses under the ‘About Me’ section).

Under Paris                                                                OK/G
New shark movie available on Netflix (right in time for summer!).  [Surely you all know that Paris is in France and French is the language spoken there, no?  Therefore, yes, there are subtitles].  You are given an explanation as to how one ended up in the Seine River.  The mayor is told about it, but, oh no, there is a triathlon coming up wherein people from all over the world will attend and she will not cancel it (whether they get rid of the shark or not)!  Sure sounds like a certain Steven Spielberg blockbuster released 50 years ago, no?  Plot-wise it may seem so, but there are differences here.  In fact, this actually adds at least one thing new to the oversaturated subgenre.  One doesn’t normally expect much from a shark attack movie---people go into the water, some of them are eaten.  It’s all a matter of the overall execution.  It may be too premature to assign this cult status just yet, but I definitely enjoyed it more than both Meg movies (my reviews for those are in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2018/08/mooby-reviews-81218.html, and here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2024/01/satanic-hispanicsmeg-2-trench.html) and many other shark attack movies (some reviewed below); the shark(s) looked real enough to me, and there were a decent amount of attacks; it’s well-shot too (director Xavier Gens has been around, debuting with the New French Extremity film, Frontier(s), in 2007).  The ending certainly hints of a continuation, and I’d welcome at least one; I did want more when it ended.  6/5/2024

*Here are my reviews of other shark movies (some may not seem as polished since they could’ve been written up to 8 years ago; I, myself, cringe when reading older reviews sometimes)*

House Shark; Super Shark; Blue Demon; Bad CGI Sharks---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2020/04/sharksploitation-time.html
The Last Sharknado; Ozark Sharks; Santa Jaws; Trailer Park Shark---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2018/09/mooby-reviews-9618.html

Bonus review:

Founders Day                                                             OK
Another “holiday” slasher film.  It actually had a brief theatrical run at the beginning of the year.  I never heard of anyone celebrating Founders Day, but the small town here (I’m guessing in Connecticut since that’s where it was filmed) does right before Election Day in November.  The killer dons a mask with a white wig and wields a gavel that doubles as a knife.  Now, as I’ve likely said many times before, and needless to say, there isn’t much to expect from a slasher flick---someone, usually in a mask, kills a bunch of people and there’s often a motive.  Sure, some of them stand out (this coming from a lifelong fan of the subgenre), but you should have a basic idea of what you’re in for.  Is this one an exception?  Absolutely not.  It’s nothing special.  I’m not dismissing it though.  The kills are fine, for the most part, albeit often predictable when they’re about to happen (not uncommon for the subgenre), and I give them a little bit of credit for trying to be a bit creative with the revelation.  Slasher aficionados may visit it again sometime in the future, but, if not, it should at least satisfy your slasher fix momentarily.  [Director/actor Erik Bloomquist also gave us She Came from the Woods, another one I thought was just okay, plus Night at the Eagle Inn (review in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2021/11/chapelwaitenight-at-eagle-inn.html) and Ten Minutes to Midnight (review in here---https://vampireclown82.blogspot.com/2021/08/ten-minutes-to-midnighta-quiet-place.html)].  6/6/2024
